Grounded

Beneath every forest canopy lies one of nature's most complex and underappreciated engineering systems. This series brings us face-to-face with it. These photographs document the basal architecture of mature trees, the zone botanists call the root collar. Exposed by erosion, age, and the slow retreat of soil, each root system tells a different story.
